Machu Picchu Train Tickets

The only way to get to Machu Picchu is through the little town of Aguas Calientes, a little tourist town at the foot of the mountain where the World Heritage site is located. However, there is no road connecting the town with the outside world, and the only other way than walking in by ways of the Inca Trail, is by taking the train.

Why consider booking our  Peru National Parks Tour? Because for the same price, our tour gets you to ALL places for which Peru is so famous, and on top of that, you get to see 9 National Parks/Reserves accompanied by a naturalist guide. There is nothing similar on the market. As Peru can be combined with other countries, we organize tours in modules: Lima Cusco, Machu Picchu module, Manu National Park module, National Parks Module, All modules.

Destinations Overview:  World Heritage Site LimaWorld Heritage Site Cusco, Amazon park Manu National Park World Heritage Site Valle Sagrado/Sacred Valley, World Heritage Site Machu Picchu, Cloud Forest Machu Picchu Sanctuary, Highland wetland Titicaca National Reserve, Uros floating islands, Altiplano wildlife park Salinas & Aguadas Blancas National Reserve, World's second deepest canyon Colca Canyon, Word heritage site Arequipa, World heritage site Nazca Lines, Pampas Galeras National Reserve, San Fernando National Reserve, Paracas National Reserve, Ballestas Islands National Reserve.

The trains leave either from Poroy, 13km from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, about 89km from Cusco in the Sacred Valley.

There are three competing train companies, PeruRail being the main one, but there are two smaller companies, Inca Rail and Machu Picchu Train, the latter two, only departing from Ollantaytambo. The mid-range prices don't seem to differ all that much, but they may vary per day.

PeruRail operates four train classes to suit different budgets :

  1. The Hiram Bingham train. This luxurious first-class train includes a luxurious lunch on the outbound trip from Poroy and dinner on the way back, a selection of Peruvian wine, cocktails, entertainment, bus connections, Machu Picchu entrance fee and a guided tour. The one-way price is around $500.

  2. The Vistadome train. This is the second class service, for about $90 including a snacks & non-alcoholic drink served at your seat. This is the service we use on our Cultural Highlights Module.

  3. The Expedition train. The third-class service has buffet car where you can buy non-alcoholic drinks and snacks; it is not that much different from the Vistadome though.

  4. The Local train. A subsidised train service only for local Peruvian communities and Peruvian nationals leaves from Poroy. Foreigners aren't allowed on this train.

PeruRail operates its trains between Aguas Calientes and Ollantaytambo  throughout the day. Some of these shuttle trains are 'Vistadome' and some are 'Expedition'.

Three times a week, PeruRail also runs a luxury tourist train, the "Andean Explorer" between Cusco and Puno on Lake Titicaca. The 385 km - about $220 - ride takes about 10 hours and takes you across the Altiplano through stunning sceneries. A three-course lunch and afternoon tea are included. This luxurious train has a dining-car, lounge and open-air observation car at the rear.
